Oxford Clean Up!

After litter hits the ground, it piles up along roadsides and enters our brooks, rivers, and wetlands. All forms of litter can be dangerous to wildlife and detract from the appearance of our rural community.

Volunteers are needed to make this cleanup a success. This is a perfect opportunity for individuals, groups, businesses, neighbors, and families to get outdoors, help protect our flora and fauna, and make Oxford a beautiful place to live.

All you need to do is fill in the following pledge form and send it back to the designated locations listed below. Check off the various commitment levels on the back, then follow through with action.

The Oxford Land Trust will sponsor a program on edible gardens by Raye Hodgson at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 9, at Oxford Town Hall, 486 Oxford Road.

The program will center on the basics of growing edible plants, especially on small plots of land.

Ms. Hodgson's background includes seven years as an agricultural conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, three years teaching high school science, a B.S. in renewable natural resources from the University of Connecticut, technical certification in composting from the Maine Compost School and more than 20 years of gardening experience.

Members of the Oxford Land Trust will be taking part in the Connecticut Forest and Park Association's annual spring trail workshop, set for Saturday, May 2, at Jackson Cove. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The rain date is Sunday, May 3. Won't you join us?

Projects will include two-log bridge building, rock and log water bar construction, trail relocation, brushing, blazing, trail kiosk construction and safe tool usage. Participants will also construct a bridge using two telephone poles.

There will be presentations in the pavilion on invasive plant species, tool maintenance, organizing and leading a trail work party and financial grant opportunities.

You should bring water, sunscreen, lunch and work gloves and dress appropriately for outdoor work. There is no cost, and tools will be provided.

The CFPA maintains more than 800 miles of trails in Connecticut, and is the oldest private non-profit conservation organization in the state.

During the week of May 4, 2009, the Oxford Land Trust will sponsor hikes on Rockhouse Hill Sanctuary for all second-graders from Quaker Farms School. Students will enjoy the great outdoors while learning about the history of RHHS, as well as the flora and fauna of this special place.

June 6, Saturday, Oxford Land Trust will sponsor a hike for National Trails Day. Connecticut Forest & Park Association (CFPA) has served as American Hiking Society's state coordinator for Trails Day since 1993. The Trails Day theme for 2009 is Take in the Outdoors, an invitation to get outside and experience everything Connecticut's great outdoors has to offer. The Oxford Land Trust will have a booth at the Second Annual Oxford Day, which will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2009 (raindate: June 7) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Oxford High School, 61 Quaker Farms School. The OLT will be available to answer your questions about upcoming events, properties, and membership. Hikes on Rockhouse Hill will take place at 11 a.m., and 2 p.m. Meet at the OLT booth.

The Oxford Land Trust will have a booth at the 10th annual Dog Days of Oxford Community Day. The event's theme will be, "How to Live a Greener Life". It will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, September 12, at Oxford Center School. The rain date is Sunday, September 13.

Make a Difference Day

Joint cleanup effort with Oxford Land Trust and Seymour-Oxford Rotary Club. On Saturday, October 3rd, at 10 a.m., meet at the entrance to Rockhouse Hill Sanctuary [there is a parking area just south of the driveway that leads to the Oxford High School]. Participate in a cleanup from the parking spot, down to the rotary near the Oxford-Seymour line, then head west and clean along the reservoir until the dam. We estimate this will take 2 hours. Interested parties can have drinks/snacks after the cleanup. We will need people to wear gloves, bring garbage bags, wear orange or bright colors [to be seen by oncoming vehicles].

Black Bear Presentation at OLT’s Annual Members Meeting

7:00 pm at Oxford Town Hall, Felicia Ortner, a Connecticut Wildlife Conservationist, will give a presentation on black bears after a brief business meeting wherein the OLT members will elect a new slate of directors for 2010.

Educational Program on Wolves

OLT's Annual Educational Program will feature a Wolf Conservation Center presentation, 7 p.m.- 8:30 p.m., in the auditorium of Quaker Farms School, 30 Great Oak Road, Oxford.

The Wolf Conservation Center (WCC), founded in 1999, promotes wolf conservation by teaching about wolves, their relationship to the environment, and the human role in protecting their future. The program includes a presentation by a speaker from the WCC, and an opportunity to see one of their wolves.

The suggested donation is $15 per family, $5 per individual, children under 5 get in free. Light refreshments will be served.

Enchanting the Forest

The Oxford recycling center will be open until 5 PM on Saturday April 24, to accept all types of trash (except hazardous waste) collected during the cleanup.

Rockhouse Hill Sanctuary -- Quaker Farms School second grade field study hikes

Members of the Oxford Land Trust will lead all second grade classes on field study hikes at the Rockhouse Hill Sanctuary on May 28th, June 1st, June 2nd and June 3rd 2010. Quaker Farms School teachers and parent chaperones will also take part. This is the 11th year that the Oxford Land Trust has led these hikes that are both educational and a lot of fun. The OLT strongly believes that it is important to introduce children at an early age to the natural world, and to stress the great value inherent in our unspoiled natural resources.

Connecticut Trails Day Hike -- Saturday, June 5, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. -- Pomperaug Trail

Hike the Blue-Blazed Pomperaug Trail north from Fiddlehead Road in Oxford through Jackson Cove to the trailhead in Kettletown State Park. Meet Bob McGarry, Peter Petrochko and Scott Roth by 9:00 a.m. at the ticket booth in Kettletown State Park to carpool to the start. The hike will be 4.6 miles, with an option to shorten the hike at Jackson Cove. Expect rolling terrain with some short, but steep climbs, as we pass charcoal hearth sites, an abandoned mill race, and views of Lake Zoar. Sponsored by Connecticut Forest and Park Association (www.ctwoodlands.org) and Oxford Land Trust (oxfordlandtrust.org). Heavy rain cancels. Pre-registration is NOT NECESSARY.
