Oxford Land Trust

Key Accomplishments

  • The OLT works with private land owners, environmental organizations, grant writers and town, state and federal officials to help save open space in Oxford.
  • The OLT currently (2008) holds title to seven parcels of land in Oxford, totaling 133 acres.
  • The OLT was instrumental in helping to preserve several hundred acres of Bridgeport Hydraulic Company property, which is now part of Naugatuck State Forest.
  • The OLT initiated the Town of Oxford purchase of the Rockhouse Hill Sanctuary and assists the town in managing the property.
  • The OLT helped to establish the Oxford Greenway along the Housatonic River.
  • The OLT sponsors annual educational programs related to its mission.
  • The OLT sponsors annual hikes in town, including one on Connecticut Trails Day, the first Saturday in June.
  • The OLT sponsors and organizes the annual Earth Day clean-up in Oxford during the month of April.
  • The OLT assists Eagle Scout candidates in offering land management projects.
  • The OLT works with local educators and grant writers to provide land management opportunities and educational projects for the Youth Conservation Corps.

AWARDS

  • 2001 Recipient: Education Award from The Land Trust Service Bureau for annually leading all second grade classes on field study hikes at the Rockhouse Hill Sanctuary.
  • 2001 Recipient: Community Citizens Award from The Oxford Grange for service to community and humanity.
  • 1999 Recipient: Challenge Award from The Land Trust Service Bureau, also for OLT’s role in the Birmingham Utilities acquisition.
  • 1998 Recipient: Conservationist Award from The Housatonic Valley Association for OLT’s role in promoting the Town’s purchase of the 520 acre Birmingham Utilities property (now known as the Rockhouse Hill Sanctuary).
